Junior & Middle School Report Cards

At InnovOak School, our approach to reporting goes beyond standard assessments. We emphasize a clear understanding of each student's progress and achievement in a way that is meaningful and actionable. Our Junior and Middle School report cards focus on helping parents understand not only how their child is achieving academically but also the specific skills and areas they are developing.

Our report cards integrate detailed "look fors" within core subjects, allowing parents to see exactly what their child has learned and which skills they are acquiring or mastering. This ensures that the learning process is transparent, and students receive targeted feedback on essential skills, from foundational concepts in subjects like mathematics to language proficiency and readiness to learn.

We evaluate students in a way that aims to ensure they meet curriculum standards at the start of each year rather than the end, allowing time for deeper learning and individualized growth. This approach helps our students build strong foundations, readying them for success throughout their educational journey.

Our report cards are issued three times per year—in November, February/March, and June—ensuring regular, transparent communication about each student's progress and learning achievements. In addition to letter grades, our approach emphasizes skills and readiness for future learning, providing families with both the academic context and developmental insights needed to support their child's success.

InnovOak Mathematics

Our mathematics program is designed to exceed the standards of the Ontario Curriculum by preparing students to achieve at an internationally competitive level. We emphasize our "Speak Math" philosophy, where students not only learn mathematical skills but also articulate their mathematical thinking with confidence and clarity. By the time students reach the upper Junior School level, they are already working at a level that is two years ahead of the Ontario curriculum expectations, ensuring a strong foundation for continued success.

We report on eight essential areas of mathematics that extend beyond traditional curriculum standards. Teachers will focus on the strands most relevant to your child, providing detailed comments to highlight strengths and areas for growth.

The strands we assess include

  • Working with Numbers

  • Mental Math and Estimation

  • Number Operations

  • Patterns and Algebraic Thinking

  • Data Management

  • Data and Probability

  • Geometry and Spatial Sense

  • Measurements

Your child will receive an overall letter grade for each subject in Junior School (Grades 1-6) and a numeric grade in Middle School (Grades 7-8). Each of the mathematics strands includes 20 specific progress indicators that your child’s teacher will use to measure their progress throughout the term.

InnovOak Language

The language program is designed to ensure that students exceed typical provincial expectations, developing a strong foundation in reading, writing, and communication skills. By the time students enter Grade 1, they are already meeting Ontario’s end-of-Grade 1 standards. This accelerated start allows our students to gain more depth and fluency as they progress, becoming highly capable readers, writers, and speakers. The focus on building skills early means that by the time they move through Junior and Middle School, students are well-prepared to engage in more advanced, nuanced language tasks.

We assess five key areas in language that go beyond the Ontario Curriculum. Teachers will provide detailed comments on the most relevant areas for each student to highlight strengths, achievements, and areas for growth.

The strands we assess include:

  • Research and Presentation

  • Reading Proficiency

  • Grammar and Spelling

  • Writing Competence

  • Print, Cursive, and Keyboarding

Your child will receive an overall letter grade in Junior School (Grades 1-6) or a numeric grade in Middle School (Grades 7-8) for the subject. Each of these strands also includes 11 specific progress indicators that your child’s teacher will measure to track their development throughout the term.

All Other Subjects

While Mathematics and Language are central to your child’s academic experience, the additional subjects play a vital role in fostering a well-rounded education. Each of these subjects contributes unique skills and knowledge that support overall development, helping students grow in diverse areas such as scientific thinking, artistic expression, physical health, and practical life skills.

These subjects are assessed with a letter grade, accompanied by two progress indicators that help capture the student’s growth within each area. Teachers will provide detailed feedback on your child's performance, including strengths, successes, and suggested next steps. This feedback is shared with parents during interviews, where students are encouraged to actively participate by discussing their progress at the end of Term 1 and Term 2.

In some instances, teachers may also reference elements from the Foundational Learning Skills Section if applicable, as challenges in these subject areas can often relate to foundational competencies such as literacy, mathematics, or overall learning skills.
