How Teachers Manage Late Work

Our late work policy is focused on changing behavior, being proactive and teaching older students the significance of meeting deadlines on the timelines that are needing attention

Assignment for evaluation is not completed by required due date

  • In consultation with student the teacher will establish a new due date for the outstanding assignment and/or assign an alternate assignment for evaluation.

  • Teacher will contact parents to inform them of the late or missed assignment and of the revised due date; as well as inform them of the deduction in marks.

  • Identify any additional supports that may be required to assist the student in completing and submitting the assignment, including following Student Success protocols established at the school.

  • When the assignment is submitted by revised due date:

    • Evaluate and assign a level

    • Lower the level by one third only (a level B+ will be adjusted to a B)

    • Record both levels for the Inspector

Assignment for evaluation is still not complete by the revised due date

  • Teacher will contact parents, advising that the revised deadline has also been missed, and of the late penalty of a third of a level deduction per school day up to the full value of the assignment.

  • This means that the mark will move down by a full letter grade every three days

  • Identify additional supports required to assist the student in completing and submitting the assignment, following Student Success protocols established at school.

  • When the assignment is submitted:

    • Evaluate and assign a level

    • Lower the level as per the original mark reduction.

    • Calculate the number of school days the work is late

    • Calculate the ongoing reductions of one level per school day

    • Record both levels for the Inspector

Assignment for evaluation is still not submitted for evaluation

  • Additional parent contact is required and a plan will need to be developed to have the work completed by the second date.

  • Student and parent need to meet with teacher, student success and /or administration may also be involved.

  • Record a zero for the assignment in your marks recording tool.
