Range of Behavioral Consequences

Appropriate behaviour will be acknowledged, appreciated, and rewarded in a variety of ways.  Praise is always productive. When necessary, the staff of InnovOak School will seek to communicate with each student why some conduct might be inappropriate in terms of the expectations of our school.  As behaviors and situations escalate either over time or in severity, more focused outcomes may be needed.   It is important for the teachers and the principal to pick appropriate measures for the situation and work to change behavior rather than just consequence it.

One or more of the following consequences may be chosen as part of the learning process:

  • Student-teacher interview

  • Student-student resolution conference

  • Remain after school or during breaks

  • Completion of Behaviour Reflection sheets

  • Removal of privileges

  • Direct one to one supervision during breaks

  • Spending time away from peers during free time

  • Making up double amount of lost time

  • Development of a behaviour performance contract

  • Involvement of guidance or professional counselling personnel

  • Referral to principal or principal designate

  • Parental contact by teacher and/or principal

  • Payment, duties, special tasks and/or other methods of compensation including service for the school

  • In school Community Service or completion of a service project

  • Home/School agreement for behavior change

  • Follow up consequences chosen in conjunction with parents

  • Two-part consequences (home and school mutually supportive

  • In-school withdrawal from classes or being sent home

  • Short term ban from school activities

  • Long term ban from school activities

  • Formal Suspension beginning with one day and escalating to 5 days

  • Academic or Behavioral probation (for older students)

  • Academic penalties for academic misconduct (loss of grades for cheating etc.)

  • Request for a Withdrawal of student at the beginning of the next term – with no return of fees

  • Immediate termination of the enrolment contract – with no return of fees

  • Police involvement when needed

  • Immediate academic and attendance expulsion from the school along with letter of trespass – with no return of fees

InnovOak School is focused on developing good citizenship and positive behaviour.  We will correct and provide consequences for inappropriate choices as needed. Behaviors happen on a continuum and we choose a variety of corrective measures that begin with conversation and progressively increase in severity.  For the most egregious situations, we will suspend, expel and include police involvement when appropriate.

Consequences are matched to the behaviour in question, the severity of the incident, the impact on the school community, and the opportunity to learn and grow from the situation.
