Habitual or Long-term Attendance Issues

In the event of a prolonged absence due to illness, students may be required to seek medical assistance and provide a doctor's note to verify their absence. This measure is taken seriously to ensure that legitimate medical concerns, school-related anxiety, or other issues are addressed appropriately.

Families dealing with anxiety or time management issues may consider engaging with proactive professionals who can support behavioral change through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or other behavioral change programs.

For absences related to concussions, a mandatory return-to-learn plan will be necessary, with specific reporting requirements from medical professionals. These assessments will determine learning accommodations as the student recovers.

Regular attendance in homeroom is mandatory as it allows students to prepare for the day, receive important announcements, and engage with teachers for academic planning and assistance.

Here are some key points regarding attendance:

  • If a student accumulates five unexcused absences from any class, the school administration and Student Success team will intervene.

  • The administration, teacher, and student will discuss the concerns and create a plan to improve regular class attendance. Senior School parents will be contacted if needed after initial contact and if the issue persists.

  • Primary, Junior, and Middle School discussions will involve parents to address the situation.

  • Attendance responsibility begins with parents in Junior Kindergarten (JK) and transitions to a student behavioral issue in Senior, and Middle School as students gain independence.

  • In Senior School, unexcused absences jeopardizing the required 110 hours of instruction may result in withdrawal from the course and loss of credit.

  • Teachers will manage lateness within their classes according to their teaching style and course requirements. Student Success will step in if classroom strategies fail to change attitudes and behaviors.

  • A social worker consultation or counseling session may be requested to address underlying issues affecting attendance.
