Consistent Lateness
Students are expected to arrive on time for classes, with lateness being defined as occurring after morning opening exercises. Any student arriving late must obtain a late slip from the office. Late arrivals are recorded in the daily attendance register and on report cards by teachers. Punctuality is a crucial habit that all students should develop, and habitual lateness will be addressed in various ways.
For students consistently late or absent, their attendance will be closely monitored by teachers and the attendance secretary. If concerns arise, the office will escalate monitoring and involve Student Success, Guidance, and parents to devise a plan aimed at reducing absences and lateness. Middle and Senior School students may be required to make up lost time through independent study, as repeated lateness and absences can jeopardize minimum credit hour requirements for Senior School courses.
In Primary and Junior School, lateness is primarily a concern for parents to address. If you are experiencing challenges with attendance and lateness, please reach out to the principal to discuss strategies and external supports available to help resolve this issue.
The Ministry of Education requires all students from 6-18 to be in school full time. As a school, we would rather work proactively with families to help address the issues that preclude attendance and punctuality. However, at some point we are obliged to make reports to Family and Children Services if the issue is not addressed.
InnovOak School does track how late a student is coming to school in quarter hour increments. This tool is used to help teachers, parents, and students identify if there is an underlying issue regarding time management, or other issues that can be addressed together
