Absence from School and Catching Up

All students are responsible for homework missed due to appointments and family events. Teachers will do their best to ensure your child gets caught up to their peers especially if their absence from school is due to illness or unplanned situations.

If your child's absence will be due to a family choice such as a, sports tournament, vacation, or other preplanned activity, teachers will only be able to give an approximate outline of what your child may miss. Due to the complexity of planning for any given day, teachers will be unable to prepare a package of materials that your child can take on the trip or to the event. If the circumstances are not planned, the school will work with a family to find ways to ensure the student is caught up and is meeting the 110 hours in Senior School (e.g. concussion or medical issue preventing attendance).

When it comes to preplanned absences due to enrichment activities or competitive sports, we are appreciative and supportive. It is important to note that each student is different and their ability to miss significant school time may differ depending on age, course, or other factors. Parents know their child best and should continue to balance the value of the activity against the lost classroom time, teacher assistance, and learning assessment that no amount of homework can completely cover. COVID demonstrated that learning is much more than the pencil and paper tasks that are assigned as practice and consolidation of learning.
